I started up my Zazzle store recently and discovered that I had the ability to add custom category images. The default image is a simple folder icon. Although the folder icons are nice, they weren’t descriptive of the Zazzle categories they represented. I wanted some basic, yet functional Zazzle icons. By functional, I wanted a visitor to be able to identify what the category contained via graphical representation of the Zazzle icon, rather than only by reading the category name. This was one of the points highlighted in my User Interface Design (UI Design) class in college. Although they are nothing special to look at, they serve their purpose well.

I use my Apparel category on Zazzle to store all custom designed Shirts for Men, Women, Kids, Toddlers, and Infants. Although I will likely separate these into sub categories within the Zazzle storefront, for now, there are no sub categories of my Zazzle Apparel category.

This Zazzle store category is quite straightforward, it is home to all of my custom designed Hats. Hopefully the number of customizable Hats Zazzle has for designers to use as a base product will grow in the future.

This Zazzle store category is home to all of my custom designed ties. Although I have yet to design for a Tie specifically on Zazzle, I still have several Ties for sale in my Zazzle store based on my other designs.

This Zazzle category icon is used to denote my custom designed Bags section. I’m in the process of designing a Bag for my wife that we will order to check the quality (we are pretty rough on bags for some reason).

Similar to Ties, I have not yet created a design specifically for an Apron, however, I have put many of my other custom designs on Aprons. This Zazzle category icon stores my custom designed Aprons.

The Mugs Zazzle sells are just awesome. You can even get a stein. And, best of all, my custom designs look great on Mugs. I don’t know why, really, but they almost always seem to work. This image houses all of my custom designed Mugs.

Mousepads are always fun to design on Zazzle. They make great functional canvases for art. This Zazzle category is where I keep all of my custom designed Mousepads.

This Zazzle category icon was created to house all of the small, inexpensive items that could be purchased through Zazzle. I never expected these to sell, but didn’t want them to sit in the “Everything Else” category and not be seen. After a few days of having my shop open, the first thing to sell was my hiker bumper sticker. I was quite surprised. This Zazzle category stores all of my custom designed Keychains, Magnets, and Stickers.

While I was trying to think of a category image to represent “Everything Else,” all I could come up with was the Plus sign. In my mind, it represents an addition of products.

The idea behind the Unsorted category was to act as a central depository for all of my custom designed items. When using Zazzle’s Quick Creation tool for creating products, I select the Unsorted category as you cannot select multiple Zazzle categories to deposit the newly created products into. After the items have been published, I enter this category and sort all of the items out into their respective Zazzle categories.
