Star Wars Wars – The popularity / competition test

That’s correct, Star Wars Wars. As some of my readers may be aware, I’m a Web Designer. However, designing websites is not always enough. A website without visitors, is wasted time, money and effort. One very important aspect of web design is Star Wars Wars.

Why Star Wars Wars?
That is a good question. And like any other good question, it deserves an answer. The term ‘Star Wars Wars’ may sound funny and, in fact, it is. However, this is an extremely popular search term in Google. Anywhere between 1 million and 2 million people search for “Star Wars Wars” each month. That means that although Star Wars Wars might be a funny phrase, it could also equal money. You see, part of having a successful online presence (traffic to a website promoting business) is visitors. In obtaining visitors, large companies have an edge. They are able to afford those annoying TV commercials, the newspaper ads, and various other forms of marketing in order to build their brand. Even the creators of Star Wars took part in mass marketing. And while most consumers might dislike the annoying commercials that take their time away from their fun programs, or the numerous other forms of advertising that get in the way of their everyday lives.. the fact remains that mass advertising works. This is where Star Wars Wars comes into play.

How is Star Wars Wars useful?
Hold on, I’m getting to that. So, where was I. Ahh yes, building a brand. Many, many companies spend millions of dollars each year trying to build a brand name. So that when a consumer thinks, “I need a new pair of shoes,” that consumer immediately thinks of a shoe store by name. This usually results in that consumer visiting the store and making a purchase. So the millions and millions of dollars spent on advertising and marketing ventures by that shoe store worked.

What? How does this relate to Star Wars Wars?
Look at you, full of questions today aren’t ya. This relates to Star Wars Wars in a unique way. Because the brand ‘Star Wars’ was built successfully, the term, phrase.. name Star Wars is quite valuable. It is synonymous with movies and many other things that can allow complete strangers to relate on a more personal basis. This success, coupled with the popularity of search on the internet, allows people to ‘tap’ into that brand and attempt to profit from it. This is where the fun comments come rolling in. Some people might say, “People spent a long time and hard work making Star Wars, who are you to profit off of there success?” And they would be right, to some degree. However, it would be stupid not to try.

Again, why Star Wars Wars?
This all comes down to search engines. If I were to make a post about my day and how I had trouble fixing the brakes on my mountain bike, very few people would care. And of those very few people, it is likely that none of them would search for (and find) my site and the specific post containing this information. So, in order to get traffic to my website, (because traffic is money) I try to pique peoples interest by offering more interesting, useful content. Recently I have been posting tips and tricks in regard to games on Facebook. Why? Because posting tips and tricks about more popular games would be useless. If I were to post tips about Halo 3, those tips would be buried amongst the myriad of other one-off tips scattered around the web, not likely to be found by anyone. However, I have identified a small ‘niche’ that allows me to produce content that I enjoy writing that can still reach people because this niche is not overly competitive. This is where Star Wars Wars comes into play.

As a web designer, I have knowledge off, and access to a few tools. One of these tools allows me to check the search volumes for particular search engines. Doing this for the term ‘Star Wars’ shows me that 16 – 30 million people search for Star Wars on a monthly basis. HOLY CRUD! I know. Imagine if my website was in the number 1 slot on the SERP (search engine results page) for google for that search term. I could potential have 16+ million visitors each month. These visitors would browse my site, possibly by products I may have for sale, or just allow me to offer niche advertising and make a pretty penny. Sadly, however, this is not possible. There are LARGE companies battling for these top spots because of their lucrative nature. In fact, even if I were able to procure the top spot for such a popular search term, I would not hold it for long. Soon others would identify it as profitable and force me out. Again, this is where Star Wars Wars comes in. Some people typo when they do a search, you could imagine typing ’staar wars’ roughly 5,000 searches per month, or ’star wras’ with around 30,000 searches per month. Identifying and then attempting to market toward these niche keyword phrases may end up bringing in some traffic to your site. However, identifying a larger keyword term (Star Wars Wars with 1-2 million searches per month) could end up being very lucrative. Hence the reason for this post.

My expectations are not high. This post is after all merely a test. I think some people may stumble upon it, read a few lines and move along. I don’t think anyone will read the entire thing, and I think even less then that (no one at all) will make a comment. However, I have been wrong many times in my life, and being wrong about making no money at all would be ok with me. :)

I intend to update this post from time to time to discuss the success of the Star Wars Wars attempt (if any). Likely however, it will fall into obscurity and I will forget about it, never update it, and move along to other, more interesting and possibly more successful tests.

Alas, if you are reading this (sometime in the future), in the spirit of testing, consider posting a comment. I’ll read it 25 years from the time this original post was made (now) and chuckle a little.. and then I’ll be sad that it never worked, and that I’m still poor.
