FarmVille Tips and Tricks: Plow Faster with a Tractor

The new FarmVille Tractor

What does the FarmVille Tractor do?

While playing FarmVille today, I got a pop up message telling me that “FarmVille has been Enhanced.” The note that accompanied that message explained that they have implemented a new item into the game, a Tractor. However, the FarmVille Tractor is not just for decoration. At a cost of 30,000 coins, the FarmVille Tractor will allow you to plow a 2×2 section at a time as opposed to a single plot at a time without the Tractor. As with most items in the game, buying them rewards you with XP. Unfortunately, another pop up blocked my view of exactly how much XP purchasing the tractor awarded. However, thanks to some truly awesome readers, we got the information via comments. It appears to give 300XP when purchased.

How does the FarmVille Tractor work?

Once purchased, the FarmVille Tractor adds a second option to the Plow menu:

Selecting this new option will allow you to plow 2×2 plots at a time:

How do you refuel the FarmVille Tractor?

They do require FarmVille Tractor Fuel to operate.

FarmVille Tractor Fuel after Plowing

As you can see in the image above, after using the tractor to plow it reduces the FarmVille Tractor Fuel a small amount. As of right now, I’m not able to determine how to refuel the FarmVille Tractor’s Fuel. I’m either missing something, or the FarmVille creators have not added that feature yet. Otherwise, it may require the FarmVille Tractor’s fuel gauge to be completely empty prior to giving you the option to refuel. Ok, thanks again to some great readers, I received comments that confirm that the fuel refills gradually over time. Also, buying two tractors currently has no benefit. This may change in the future, but two individuals have reported no increase in total fuel or fuel regeneration speed. If anyone notices something different, or otherwise has more information, make a comment and let me know.

— UPDATE 8/20 —
The Facebook Game FarmVille has been updated and now includes purchasable fuel for your tractors! .. Wait.. you can’t buy it with coins? It takes FarmVille Cash? That sucks. Yeah, that’s right. Zynga has released yet another update to their FarmVille game, and it requires you to spend REAL money. I looked back at the game, and I think the ‘Fuel Tanks’ as they are labeled under the Tractors section of the market, may add additional fuel capacity to the tractor rather than refilling the fuel. This seems to be more likely rather than my first assumption. The fuel tanks only refill your fuel levels. One reader commented saying that purchasing one of the refuel tanks gave him or her 300 out of the total possible 150 fuel. Once that was used, it was gone.

I have mixed feelings about this.
The bad:

  • This is stupid, there isn’t ANY way to get a Tractors fuel refilled other than time, or spending real cash.
  • It upsets me, because I KNOW there are people out there that will pay money for this, further encouraging them to add more items that require real money to purchase.

The good?:

  • Some people will spend real money on the game to purchase the fuel. This, in turn, will attract more attention from Zynga causing them to create more content and produce more updates.

What do you think about the FarmVille Tractor Fuel refills costing real cash?

With all of that being said. There seems to be three benefits to the most recent update that we don’t have to pay (real cash) for:

  1. A new color of tractor.
  2. New crops!
    • Carrots
    • Red Wheat
    • Yellow Melon

Check out my other FarmVille post, Facebook: FarmVille Tips and Tricks (Part 1) – Best Income / XP Crops, for more crop information.

  3. Fuel Gauge Popup

fuel popup Facebook: FarmVille Tips and Tricks (Part 2) – Tractor (Plow Faster)

FarmVille Fuel Gauge Popup

Hovering your mouse over the Fuel Gauge now displays the total amount of fuel you currently have out of 150, and a countdown timer of how long until you will receive more fuel. The timer counts down form 2:30 (2 minutes thirty seconds) and will reward you with 1 additional point of fuel when it runs out. It also looks like they may have increased the maximum amount of fuel from 100 to 150.. although, I was never able to confirm that the original counter was 100 to begin with.

What the FarmVille Tractor wont do.

The FarmVille Tractor does not help you harvest or plant your crops. All it does is help you plow the fields. I would assume they will be coming out with other equipment you can purchase that will help with the other aspects of farming (planting and harvesting).

Other FarmVille Tractor options:

A fun little ‘Horn’ option is in the list. I won’t spoil the fun, try it out for yourself.

Should I buy two FarmVille Tractors to increase my fuel?

As mentioned elsewhere in this post, having two FarmVille Tractors will not currently be beneficial. Two of my readers / FarmVille players have reported buying a second FarmVille Tractor and it has neither increased their total fuel, nor their fuel regeneration rate. Although, as pointed out by Farmer Doug, the Tractor does look pretty cool. Having a 2nd on your FarmVille Farm would make for a nice decoration. So, as it is right now, owning two will not effect your FarmVille Tractor Fuel.

  • Roflcopter Says:

It actually plows 2×2 at a time.

  • Roflcopter Says:

    Also, 300xp to buy it

  • sue Says:

I plowed my farm using the tractor. The fuel amount did not last for the whole farm, and i had to plow using the hoe. Now i cant see how to get more fuel! How do i get more?

  • sue Says:

Oh disregard that last question. With time the fuel automatically goes up!

  • Eric Says:

i feel like i got ripped off. the tractor is garbage. it only sows a 2×2 square, and it runs out of fuel fast. i can’t even sow my whole 16×16 farm with it… i hope they make a tractor that can harvest and re-seed too, because this one is useless.

    nice blog though, well written.

  • Steven Says:

You get 300xp for purchasing the tractor, and the fuel gauge fills gradually over time, not too sure how long too fill a full tank.

  • mesk Says:

400XP for buying a tractor…I just got mine tonight!!!

  • Walter Says:

The tractor earns you 300 EXP

  • Farmer Doug Says:

The fuel tank holds 100 points of fuel and each individual square of land costs 1 point of fuel to plow. If you stay on your own farm page it seems to add 1 point of fuel per minute *roughly* back to the fuel tank. I bought 2 tractors hoping to bypass the “not having enough fuel” to finish plowing my entire 16×16 lot. It does not work however, it seems that both tractors use the same fuel tank so if one is empty they are both empty. hmmmm wasted 30k… oh well nice looking lawn ornament after all… heh.
The XP bonus for purchasing the tractor is 300 XP.

  • Alex Horn Says:

When you purchase the tractor you get 300 xp.

  • Mike Says:

    Purchasing the tractor gives 300xp.
Plowing costs 15 per plot (as normal) plus 1 coin for each plot for gas. You are also awarded 1xp for each plot (as normal).
It plows very quickly and you can queue plowing if you’re quick enough.
It’ll be nice when they have tools to harvest.

  • sunny Says:

hey, can you buy 2 tractors? can you plow more or fuel faster with multiples?

  • Farmguy Says:

    Tractor gives 300 exp.

  • JK Says:

You get 300xp for that tractor

  • Makeswell Says:

perfect post. i’ve been thinking it is a pain to plow, so i’m glad they made this.
i guess the fuel is to stop people from like power leveling or something and it refills over time.

  • Matthew Says:

To answer your question, the plow gives you 300 XP when you buy it. And the horn is cute. ^_^

  • Jesh Says:

You gain 300 exp from buying the tractor

  • Daniel Says:

I just bought one also it was 300xp. I’m also curious re: the fuel we’ll see I guess.
    Daniel

  • Nick Says:

Tractor gives 300 xp. I had the same issue you did with the popup, but decided to see if i can plow more land with multiple tractors and bought a second one. It didn’t raise my gas gauge, so i guess i’ll see tomorrow.

  • Rick Says:

    @Roflcopter
Well.. that was embarrassing. I saw 4 plots and thought 4×4. You are obviously correct.. thank you for informing me of my error!

  • Rick Says:

    @Farmer Doug
Thank you for the information. That was my next step, to pick up another tractor to see if it changed the total amount of fuel at all (thank you for saving me 30,000 coins).

    Rick

  • Trav Says:

You can also plow your spoiled dirt with it. the only problem is that if you make a mistake and only try to do to at a time and there is open area next to it, it creates another plot

  • Trav Says:

oh, and okease explain what the horn option does because it doesnt do anything for me

  • Rick Says:

    @Trav
You probably have the Sounds option toggled off (as I did when I tried it the first time). Just click the little sound icon in the upper left corner of the game and you will hear the horn the next time you do it. Remember though, the Music button wont help you, you need to sounds button.

    Rick

  • Skippy Says:

What a HUGE disappointment this turned out to be! This game is tedious enough to click on each square to harvest, then plow, then plant. When I first saw the tractor I said to myself “Finally! A way to harvest or plow or plant the whole field at once.” ….wait….what? It only plows? Only 2×2? And it has FUEL?!?

I’m sure they have their reasons. Maybe they figured people would get bored with the game if they do the same thing in less time… I dunno. *sigh*

  • Zabayone Says:

i want to play as real farmer..

add some other tractor for planting and harvesting..

may be we can buy some fuel{(real)no refilling}..
and other part of that machine so it can be better(make the tractor have bigger area)..

  • Hanny Marsden Says:

Frankly, I am hating on the tractor. It cost 80 coins to plow a 2×2 vs. 60 coins doing it alone. Thats a lot of coin to waste. Does anyone know how much you get back when you sell it.

  • Gaiwa Says:

“It upsets me, because I KNOW there are people out there that will pay money for this, further encouraging them to add more items that require real money to purchase.” & “Greedy”

Ähm…. this is a studio, and they are professionals. Would you say, that you are greedy, if you want a salary for your daily work?! You dont HAVE TO pay real money for the game in any way. Everything is optional and not necessary. But this is a studio with professional people who work on this, and they need payment. There is nothing greedy about that.

And why does it upset you, if people spend their money for items they like? Does it upset you, that people spend money for a normal pc/ps3/xbox game in a shop? Or does it upset you, when people spend money in a bar for a cocktail (it has no use, but beeing fun to drink and taste good).

Im not from the lobby or this studio, but Im artist and I worked on professionell productions and still do. And we all ask ourselves what the hell is wrong with people who think, that we (or musicians, bands, actors, photographers, writers, directors, and so on) are greedy just because we cant and dont want to work for free. Im serious, this makes me angry… all these people who are downloading illegal games, mp3s, ebooks and so on dont fuck “the greedy industrie” and “the big rich publishers”, the fuck the people who work on these projects, and they fuck them really hard. Today we are at a point where *most* of the people DONT pay, which means we all are payed less… often less then the most people in normal jobs. And thats not the fault of the “greedy” studios or publishers, but of the users at home who give every artist the finger. Music is the best example. Today everybody is touring like a psycho: The reason: Perhaps 5-10% of the people who hear the music paid for it. Sometimes 20%. And than this “but the real fans pay” or “if its really good, they buy it after testing it” (for games too). Oh really? The play 50% a downloaded 20 hours, and then they buy it, when they have it already? This doesnt happen…

sorry, it wasnt supposed to be unfriedly. but i get “angry” if i see, that everybody calls artists and workers (programming, ect) “greedy”… not because they want muuuuch money, but because the need money at all. this game for example is not the project of 2 16 yrs old school boys… the spend fulltime work at it, ect… they cant do it for free, and why should they. nobody else does.

  • Denny Lin Says:

I purchased 1 of the fuel.. and it changed my fuel from 150/150 to 300/150.

Later on, i used my tractor to flow, and it became 0/0 again. The fuel does not expand the capacity permanently.. therefore in my opinion, it sucks BIG TIME

  • Franks Says:

The tractor is a joke. If you expand your farm to the new sizes, it barely covers 1/4 of your land before running out of fuel (on one tank).

Also, the extra fuel tanks that you buy with real cash are only REFILLS. Why would you pay real money for a one-time use item in a Facebook app?? You’d think that it would at least give a permanent fuel capacity increase since you’re spending real cash in the game. Utterly ridiculous.

  • Franks Says:

The tractor/fuel concept was a good idea but poorly executed.

Instead of using their time trying to squeeze money out of players, Zynga needs to listen to the complaints (EXTREME tedium when harvesting, connection issues when accessing farms, buggy gift requests, etc.) and focus their efforts on addressing these issues. Yes, it’s labeled “beta” but this is more reason to fix issues now instead of coming up with irritating schemes to make quick cash. Zynga: Make a good product first so people come back to it for the long-term, otherwise you’ll never be considered a serious company.

  • ja Says:

it is making money because you hav 2 buy the fuel with cash

  • Hossy Says:

The horn doesn’t work. Also, the 150 represents how many plots it can plow with a full tank. I haven’t bought additional fuel tanks. I still have the original $5 Zynga gave me when they introduced FarmVille cash and now I noticed I have $6 and 1 fuel tank is $3. So, I’m thinking that since the largest expansion you can buy is 20×20 (400 plots) and 1 fuel tank will do 150 plots, that the extra fuel tanks you buy with cash extend the capacity thereby allowing you to plow all 400 (3 * 150 = 450).

  • Blag Says:

I bought a fuel tank with the cash that I got when you join farmville and it seems to have disappeared after it was used, is still avalable in the marketplace and did not increase max capcity just went over what the maximum is ment to be. Hope this helps someone.

  • Nichole Says:

I just bought the FarmVille Tractor and a little advice. If you are going to spend 30,000 on it, make sure that your land is plowed in straight straight lines. Mine were a little skewed and so unless i delete the patches of fallow land and reset them, it will only plow 2 patches of fallow land at a time…Lame.

  • emilyy Says:

    hi;
i want to purchase a tractor, but im not too sure.. because there not really worth their money to be honest.
i thought they harvested aswell? if they do please respond here; since i dont wish to publish my e-mail. thankssss. :)

  • Rick Says:

    @Hanny Marsden
I remember it costing the same, 60. Are you sure it’s 80? I’ll be checking again.

  • Rick Says:

    @Denny Lin
Thank you for this information, I will update my post with it. Also, I agree with you, it does suck big time.

  • Rick Says:

    @emilyy
You’re correct, as of right now they do not harvest or help plant. They only help plow.

  • Cboarder Says:

by the way…i dont know if this was already said but u gain fuel every 2:30 minutes

  • Franks Says:

Edit to my first post: the tractor covers more like 1/3 of a 20X20 field (not 1/4) on a single full tank.

Since you get 1 fuel every 2.5 minutes, it takes 6.25 hours to replenish the 150 capacity tank completely.

  • Miguel Says:

The FarmVille tractor was worse than I thought. I mean like, my worst favorite parts are that it doesn’t harvest or plant and the plow size is small.

  • Ros Says:

Couldn’t you just sell the old tractor… and buy a new one with a full fuel tank?
Has anyone tried that yet, ’cause I can’t be bothered to scroll through this entire humongous page of comments.

  • smsiner Says:

If they offered it in green, I would buy it (coins) just to sit on the farm.

  • mikeP Says:

What’s up with the coin that pops up when you use the tractor periodically?

  • Mehmet Says:

Fuel doesnt last even for plowing the whole farm so it would be sensless if tracktor do otherthan plowing as you want have the fuel. However still a nice decoration to have in farm :)

  • Rick Says:

    @mikeP
I watched my coin total while plowing and noticed a difference after a coin popped up. I did a bit o’ math and it came out to be a 50 coin increase. After reading the forums, however, it appears that it is a 100 coin increase. They may have changed it from 50 to 100 as I did my testing right after they started showing up. Or, I could have just been wrong with my calculations.

Anyway, the coin that pops up appears to give you 100 coins. :)

    Rick

  • Farmer Tim Says:

harvester was just released. i guess its like the harvesting equivalent of the tractor. go get your harvest on. theres the downside that it is huge and almost takes up one plot though, but i say its a small sacrifice.

  • spencer k Says:

ok well the whole tractor and new harvester feature are completely useless. There is a glitch in the game if u lock your character in a square made of fences…so fence your guy off from the feilds. He just sits there and plows and plants and harvests super fast. So the harvester and tractor are completely obsolete, they are actually slower than doing this method mentioned!
    cheers happy farming

  • Yitbos Says:

Harvester is available, same behavior as tractor only it is for harvesting…yeah, no updates to gas issue…that sucks, they should at least allow us to convert a set amount of coins into cash…yeah like that will ever happen.
