FarmVille vs. Farm Town

Interesting. FarmVille is curiously similar to Farm Town. In fact, my spreadsheet that I created for Farm Town seems to work just fine when you plug the FarmVille information in. I’m not a lawyer, nor am I well versed with the law.. but, the creators of Farm Town may want to contact a lawyer. lol. Many of the aspects are exactly the same, the leveling system, farm layout, purchasable items… scary.

FarmVille Crops – Income

It costs 15 coins to plow a field in order to plant crops in the facebook game FarmVille. Changing this information in my spreadsheet along with the costs and sale prices (self harvest for now, if there is a difference in FarmVille, I’m not aware of it yet) we can calculate the best value crops.

Super Berries
Cost: 10 Sell: 100 Harvest Time: 2 hours (3 days) Planting XP: 1
Super Berries were released when FarmVille’s Facebook Fan page’s fan total reached 500,000. Zynga has stated that they will be available this weekend only (Aug 22nd / 23rd, 2009). It is likely, however, they will bring them back every now and then.

FarmVille XP

Experience in FarmVille appears to be earned whenever you plant a crop, a tree.. or an object. The most common way to earn XP is by planting crops, since this is done most often. At this time, it appears as if Strawberries are the the best crop for earning XP. The fact that they can be harvested (and then planted again) ever 4 hours gives them this title. If you are not able to harvest and re-plant every 4 hours, they are just as beneficial as any other crop. Essentially, the more often you plant a crop, the more XP you will earn.

– UPDATE — 1/7
The best XP crops in order:

Crops that share numbers are tied with one another.
* Raspberries do not give XP for planting. However, you earn 1 XP for plowing. Because they are a two hour crop, you can plow twice in a 4 hour time period. This means over 4 hours, you can earn 2 XP, the same as Plowing and Planting Black Berries, Blueberries, and Strawberries. That being said, they are inferior to each of the other #1 crops, the math just works out for them to all be tied. If I were to take into account the time it takes to harvest, plow and re-plant the Raspberries, they would not be equal on this list.

FarmVille Spreadsheet

I have had a lot of people ask me for my calculations and how I’ve arrived at my results. I keep a spreadsheet that I use to calculate the information. Each crop is calculated hourly, costs are deducted and profits / benefits are calculated.

    Super Berries are a weekend fad, from what I’ve read. They will not be around after this weekend. It is likely, however, that they will be brought back from time-to-time as promotions call of them.

    I will be adding them to my list shortly.

  • Sarah Says:

    I got addicted to Farmville about a week ago, after I saw how much fun my sister is having. My farm is still the first size, and I’ve not yet bought a tractor or any decorations. Everything on my farm is gifts and crops. However, I started out with 5 FV like everyone. In the time being, I’ve gained 7 FV! I don’t know what the trend is. Please reply if you do, because I have 12 FV and I only know how I got the first 5 FV! Please reply if you know the answer!

  • Miguel Says:

    Yeah, that happened to me too. I had 1 Farm cash then 3!

  • Mike Says:

    I haven’t read any of the comments before this, so this may very well have been answered. But how are you rating this “income.” Seeing if you do each crop by a per hour basis, you’d find out that Raspberries are making 3328xhour and that Tomatoes are making 2336xhour? How do your calculations differ?

  • MaryPaige Says:

    What does it mean when a flipping coin appears on your screen when you are harvesting your crop or plowing?

  • Rick Says:

    @MaryPaige
    I had this same question Mary. So, I started plowing 1 square at a time rather than queuing my plows and made a mental note of my money before each plow. At one point, I had ###,872, then, a coin flipped in the air and I had ###,907. After doing a little quick math, it looks like the coin that flips in the air gives you 50 coins. It appears as less because of the 15 coins you spend to plow the plot of land that earned you the 50 coins.

    Please, if anyone one has a different experience, let me know. I’m not certain that this is the only thing that happens. It may also give experience.

    For the past 3 days, I see a small golden circle looking like a coin roll around my farm for around 10 seconds, then fading away. This comes
    randomly as I play farmville. I have a screenshot of it.. does anyone else get this, and why does it come?

  • Rick Says:

    @Viprewind
    Yes, Raspberries give you 0 xp. However, you do get 1 xp for plowing the plot that you plant Raspberries in. So, if you plant raspberries twice, you will earn 2 xp over the 4 hour span (not counting the amount of time it takes to harvest / replow / replant). This makes them comparable to Blueberries, however, Blueberries are still the best 4 hour or less crop.

  • Rick Says:

    Originally answered via email:

    Mike,

    The difference between your calculation and mine: It appears that you are not factoring in the cost to plow each plot. And then, you are multiplying your result by 256, is this correct?

    If this is correct, your calculation would read: (sale price / seed cost) * harvest hours
    Raspberries: ((46-20)/2)*256 = 3,328
    Tomatoes: ((173-100)/8)*256 = 2,336

    My calculation: (sale price / (seed cost + plow fee)) * harvest hours
    Raspberries: ((46-(20+15))/2)*256 = 1,408
    Tomatoes: ((173-(100+15))/8)*256 = 1,856

    Removing the *256 leaves you with:
    Your Calculations:
    Raspberries: 13
    Tomatoes: 9.125

    My Calculations:
    Raspberries: 5.5
    Tomatoes: 7.25

    The plow cost is important. If you don’t include the plow cost, you’re not calculating the exact profit of the crop.
    For example:
    Your Calculation for raspberries shows as 3,328. If you then determine the cost you paid to plow those 256 plots per hour you will find 1,920. If you take my calculation and add the plow cost / hour for 256 plots, you end up with your calculation (1,408 + 1,920 = 3,328). This shows you that the math is sound.

    I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.

    How do I get the fence pieces to turn left and right?

  • Rick Says:

    @Floozie
    I have always thought it was just a fun feature within the game. If you have your sound effects on, the animal will make a noise when you pet it.

  • Rick Says:

    @Stacy
    When you left click on a fence piece, a menu should appear with an option labeled “rotate.” This should rotate the fence piece around and let you move it.

  • Robin Says:

    I have new plots, but would like to move them around – cant figure out how to do it?

  • Rick Says:

    @Robin
    Select the far right tool, the shovel, and then click on the plot. This will allow you to delete it and then you can plow a new plot where you want it to be. I’m not aware of a way to move a plot once it has been plowed. If you don’t want to waste the plowed plot, plant some Raspberries. Once their harvested, delete the plot of land before you plow it.

    Hope this helps.

    the graphics on FARMVILLE are better than that on FARMTOWN. but the slow harvest and plow time is rather absurd. it seems you click a ready to harvest plot and it take forever to finally work. i am a level 34 with 7 million coins and 365,000 points on FARMTOWN so i think i knjow where i am coming from. I bought a tractor and a harvester on FARMVILLE but it is of little use because if you have a full field to harvest the fuel runs out halfway. don’t know how to earn FARMVILLE dollars and sure not going to give my credit card number out to play a cartoon game. i will just slowly work my way up in the best way i know. thanks for listening to my comments. also, what are the points required for different level on FARMVILLE. Can’t seem to find that info anywhere. bye for now

  • Brian Wolfe Says:

    You site raspberries as equivalent to blueberries and strawberries, but raspberries give no XP at all. You get your one XP for plowing the plot, but NOTHING for sowing, so what’s up with your analysis (as blueberries and strawberries do give you one XP for sowing, but not raspberries)?

  • Lynda Says:

    I love farmville… about the rabbits.. I dont know if you have to have so many neighbors… but my rabbits give 60 coins for the angora wool.
    Anyway… this beats FarmTown and MyFarm.. and even Fashion Wars… Those programs seem to be chock full of nuts…. and the bugs are eating the nuts… things reverting backwards… going to the marketplace at times…everyone is invisible… the animals are not harvestable… and some of the trees too… what is up with the flowers… they just take up water.. no return on investment at all… I finally blocked FarmTown and MyFarm.. they arent fun anymore… they are frustrating… so time for them to go away.

    This developer should be the MODEL developer for Zynga games…. as the game is updated regularly… fresh and new for the players.

  • Rick Says:

    @Brian Wolfe
    Good question. To answer, Raspberries are a 2 hour crop. From plowing the plot, you gain 1 xp every 2 hours. By planting Strawberries and Blueberries (and now Black Berries) you gain 1 plow XP and 1 planting XP per 4 hours. Over a 4 hour period, (2 plantings of Raspberries and 1 planting of Strawberries, Blueberries and Black Berries) you end up with the same amount of XP for each individual crop. An argument can be made that it takes time to harvest and re-plant the Raspberries, which makes them worse than the others. I’ve had this question asked a couple of times now. I think I will look into adding something to the post.

    entire game moves entirely to slow. i am a level 34 on FARMTOWN. 7 million cions 10 million spent in the store and 350,000 EX points. take forever on FARMVILLE. where can you fins out about how many EX points for the higher levels for FARMVILLE. Fun little game but moves entirely too slow. also the tractor and harvester always runs out of fuel before job is done. plows and harvest on 40 plots takes a full tank of fuel. how in the heck do you earn FARMVILLE dollars without paying cash for them. sure not giving out my credit card numbertyo a cratoon game. thanks for listening to my comments. maybe the game will improve in the future but for now i will stick with FARMTOWN.

    how do u sell your crops for money? sorry i have only had face book/farmville for about a week

  • b swiss Says:

    u guys are idiots. rice is horrible, u lose coins everytime. u forgot to take into account to cost of plowing!!!!!! u made a major mistake in your numbers!!!!! do it again!

  • Evgeny Says:

    The calculation is fairly simple:

    (sell – cost) / harvest = performance

    The crops with the best performance give you more money for your time. And calculating XP is too easy to mention.

    ADVISE GIVEN FOR A FARMER UPTO LEVEL 18!:

    Trees are the largest income on a limited field!
    If you want to become rich, go for lemon trees.

    There fit 16 trees per square of field. True that trees don’t benefit much compared to the fields, but if you run out of space, you will do wise to systematically eradicate fields square by square, and place lemon trees there. In order to calculate the profit of the lemon trees per SQ of field, you’ll have to multiply the tree’s profit by 16. This far overwhelms the profit you can get out of a farm field!

    In the beginning, and in times when you have lots of free space, and little money, I’d suggest going for squares of farm land to seed.
    Only when money or space become an issue switch to trees.

    You can always exchange coins for EXP by purchasing hay bale’s. For 100 you can gain 5 exp.
    The reverse is not possible.

    My advise:
    Start creating plots, and go for strawberry, then soybeans, then rice, and stay with rice.
    Fill the land with plots, and the remainder of the land fill it with lemon trees. Later on in the game (around level 10-15) your plot will be full. Expand your land there, and plant sq acres of soil for seed farming (rice).
    continue to do that until you have 24 SQ’s (current maximum).
    Then slowly exchange plots of lands for trees.
    Tree’s start benefiting after 34 days, and will make a higher profit than soil after 50 days.

    Trees are long term commitments,of daily checking and harvesting.

    Soil (especially raspberry’s) give you quick money.

    If you have the time seed raspberries every 2 hours instead of rice. You will be able to gain +1EXP for every replow,so in the end you’ll receive more EXP with that, then with planting rice, if you seed, harvest, and replow more than 6x per day (eg: 8-10AM; 10-noon; noon-2PM; 2-4PM; 4-6PM; 6-8PM; 8-10PM).
    If you can, sow rice or Pumpkin before going to bed.
    It gives you 8 or 12 hours to sleep, and by the next day you can harvest it, and plant something else.
    Pumpkin does not earn as much, but it’s good to grow over night, when time is an issue.

    If you’re more the 24 hour player, eg: play in the evening after work, you might wanna take a look at pineapple, which does give a good profit every 48 hours.
    If you play every 12 hours, (eg before and after going to work), Rice is number one to invest in!

    Keep the borders of your farm filled with lemon tree’. The borders are too small to add a SQ of field anyways.
    Only purchase animals to get the ribbons.

    Also, keep a small place in your farm open for placing any gift you receive.
    If you have all animal ribbons, sell all animals and go for trees.

    Do not purchase anything with FV bills.
    Keep those for in the end of the game!
    FV bills (cash) is hard to get, and needed to purchase certain items like for instance the Akai tree.
    If you do want to purchase something with it, purchase the akai tree from it. It will boost you along the game pretty fine, for it has a large profit!

    yo some1 had it right up top. if you have money just buy exp. buy the biggest farm you can with farm cash or otherwise plant trees around the edge where there isnt enough room to plow. plant seeds on the rest clearout like 8 squares for hay bails 5 exp per bail. and just delete the suckers. Ive only been playin for 2weeks and im at level 28 and climbing and i have a life! sunflowers once a day on 18×18 gets you alot of money! and you you only have to play alil a day I’ll have the Villa by the end of the week… i also have 300 trees around the edge producing some $$$$$.

  • philip Says:

    if you want xp and money, just plants tomatoes all the time and buy haybails with the extra money

  • steven Says:
