Facebook: FarmVille Tips and Tricks (Part 1) – Best Income / XP Crops
FarmVille vs. Farm Town
Interesting. FarmVille is curiously similar to Farm Town. In fact, my spreadsheet that I created for Farm Town seems to work just fine when you plug the FarmVille information in. I’m not a lawyer, nor am I well versed with the law.. but, the creators of Farm Town may want to contact a lawyer. lol. Many of the aspects are exactly the same, the leveling system, farm layout, purchasable items… scary.
FarmVille Crops – Income
It costs 15 coins to plow a field in order to plant crops in the facebook game FarmVille. Changing this information in my spreadsheet along with the costs and sale prices (self harvest for now, if there is a difference in FarmVille, I’m not aware of it yet) we can calculate the best value crops.

Super Berries

Super Berries were released when FarmVille’s Facebook Fan page’s fan total reached 500,000. Zynga has stated that they will be available this weekend only (Aug 22nd / 23rd, 2009). It is likely, however, they will bring them back every now and then.
FarmVille XP
Experience in FarmVille appears to be earned whenever you plant a crop, a tree.. or an object. The most common way to earn XP is by planting crops, since this is done most often. At this time, it appears as if Strawberries are the the best crop for earning XP. The fact that they can be harvested (and then planted again) ever 4 hours gives them this title. If you are not able to harvest and re-plant every 4 hours, they are just as beneficial as any other crop. Essentially, the more often you plant a crop, the more XP you will earn.

Crops that share numbers are tied with one another.
* Raspberries do not give XP for planting. However, you earn 1 XP for plowing. Because they are a two hour crop, you can plow twice in a 4 hour time period. This means over 4 hours, you can earn 2 XP, the same as Plowing and Planting Black Berries, Blueberries, and Strawberries. That being said, they are inferior to each of the other #1 crops, the math just works out for them to all be tied. If I were to take into account the time it takes to harvest, plow and re-plant the Raspberries, they would not be equal on this list.

FarmVille Spreadsheet
I have had a lot of people ask me for my calculations and how I’ve arrived at my results. I keep a spreadsheet that I use to calculate the information. Each crop is calculated hourly, costs are deducted and profits / benefits are calculated.

Have you figured out why there are rabbits? I got suckered into playing this game, and it is more about the competition than the slow game play. What I cannot figure out is why there are rabbits? They take 5 days or so to “harvest”, but aren’t worth any coins.
July 14th, 2009 at 10:35 pm
rabbits are pretty much there for looks… they dont take five days to harvest.. you can harvest them anytime you would like… you just have to be at least a level 7.. this applies for all animals and selling trees as well.
July 15th, 2009 at 11:12 am
the rabits are the best thing to sell. u can earn 60 coins for each one. I never keep them, whenever I recieve one I sell it right away.
July 15th, 2009 at 8:19 pm
whats is up with the barns and other buildings? and the decorations? do they serve a purpose? or are they just there to dress up the land
July 17th, 2009 at 1:33 pm
Once you can plant Peppers, you can throw everything else out the window. Peppers give you 92 profit per day! Yowzers!
July 17th, 2009 at 2:03 pm
Rice costs 45, sells for 96 in 12 hours.
Cotton costs 75, sells for 207 in 3 days.
Pepper costs 70, sells for 162 in 1 day.
So, Rice is still a pretty good option, but with so much clicking to do (also with Farm Town) I can only plant once a day. However, Farmville has a much, much better interface than Farm Town simply because you can queue all your work and sit back and watch. If only Farmville had Farm Town’s public marketplace for hiring each other, I would be completely sold on Farmville.

You know the trees that you can send as gifts yeah(but cannot buy in the shop),Avacardo trees
Bannana Tree, Passion Fruit tree, Apricot tree,
and a pomigrante tree Can you buy them in the shop at highest level?

Pineapples grow in 48hrs, cost 95 and yield 242
July 22nd, 2009 at 2:03 pm
Peppers give the most money, for sure.. (Do not currently have the cost/day of potatoes or corn), but the XP of peppers is exactly 1/4 of the potential XP of strawberries.
This doesn’t work well for me, seeing as the potential profit of strawberries is still more than 3/4 of peppers.. Money is easy to make in farmville.. I’d rather worry about the XP, and stick with the strawberries, especially since they are still in the top 5 for both XP (#1) and Profit (#5) potential.

I received a dragon, it gives magic milk and sells for 350 coins every 2 days.

this is for lvl 1-12 so yea iuno bout peppers and such lols have fun correct me if you may please.
July 26th, 2009 at 10:28 pm
oh and btw strawberries wil be 3 times the experience as rice as it has to be grown 3 times in 12 hours laters
July 31st, 2009 at 6:42 am
New stuff came out to farmville. sunflowers, rasberries and blueberries. rasberries every 2 hours, gaining 1 more coin each crop, but u gain no XP from them.. kinda gay. a qustion though.. isn’t the other guy write? Arn’t peppers the best?
July 31st, 2009 at 9:38 am
Peppers are no longer worth it…
Peppers (harvest every 24 hours): profit $77/plot, $539/plot/week, 2xp/plot, 21xp/plot/week
Blueberries (harvest every 4 hours): profit $26/plot, $1092/plot/week, 1xp/plot, 84xp/plot/week
So assuming you can harvest every 4 hours for a week and you have a 16×16 farm you will earn $279,552.00 coins and 21,504 XP! You would essentially reach the end of the game in 1 week unless you’re willing to spend real cash to purchase the “dollar” items in the market.
Of course the game is still in beta and growing so there may not be an end to the levels for all I know.
I also have not reached Watermelons, Potatoes, Corn, or Sunflowers.
But those sound like low yield / high cash crops to me.
July 31st, 2009 at 11:34 am
Raspberries (new) are the best bang for your coins. They earn 5.5 coins / hour. Next are Pepers with 3.8, then Rice & Pineapples at 3.0 coins / hour.
August 1st, 2009 at 8:32 am
Rabbits are harvestable now and yeild 60 coins. You can buy rasberries and blueberries, both are the highest turnover per hour. Rasberries are approximately 5 coins per hour and blueberries are 6.
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:01 pm
Trees are great if you can afford enough of em. You can fit 16 of them in place of one plowed field and costs are a one time deal, then rake in the money. For example, Lemon Trees in one plowed plot of land space, will yield approx. 218 coins a day, but you only have to harvest every 3 days and you only have to buy them once.
August 4th, 2009 at 4:04 am
Blueberries and Strawberries are the best for XP. Raspberries are not as good because even though it only takes 2 hours for them to grow and so you would plow twice as much as the other two you lose about 10-15 min each harvest with Raspberries just because of the time it takes to pick plow and then replant. So if you are looking to level fast and expect to play often Strawberries are the way to go until you are high enough level to plant Blueberries.
August 4th, 2009 at 10:18 pm
Actually, because you can plant 16 trees per each “plot” where you would normally plant a crop, trees end up being more profitable per area. However because they are so expensive to buy it takes a long time to pay off the cost of that tree. But if you have a lot of friends you can get a number of trees each day and build up your farm that way.
August 6th, 2009 at 6:55 pm
Profit Hours Profit per hour
Strawberries 10 4 2.50
Eggplant 48 48 1.00
Wheat 65 72 .90
Soybeans 33 24 1.38
Squash 66 48 1.38
Pumkin 23 8 2.88
Artichokes 119 96 1.24
Rice 36 12 3.00
At this stage Rice is the most profitable per hour but I’m only level 7.
August 7th, 2009 at 1:09 am
the problem w/ trees royce and all others who love trees is that there is no way to gain exp yes you get it the time you plan trees but besides that if u have ur whole place full of trees you can no longer gain exp. so if ur content w/ a 16X16 with no way to gain exp once beta is over then fine plant trees but if you want to grow in levels then to hell with trees and spam the good stuff Blueberries and Strawberries(depending on ur level)
August 7th, 2009 at 2:08 pm
Why are people saying raspberries??? Do the math… raspberries give you the same XP as blueberries but only $924 per week whereas blueberries give you $1092 per week. Blueberries are $168 better per week than raspberries. Don’t bother figuring yields out by hour because you cannot harvest every hour.
Until more crops are added, blueberries are the BEST for XP and coins! If you’re not worried about XP… Sunflowers are the best for weekly profit with a yield of $1155.
So… let’s say you have the largest field you can get right now (16×16), that’s 256 plots (per week):
blueberries – $279,552.00 and 21504 XP
sunflowers – $295,680.00 and 1792 XP
August 12th, 2009 at 9:35 am
Is this up to date? From your list, you put wheat at the bottom, way lower than strawberries (I’m still new so don’t have access to the other things yet.) However, by my calculations wheat is much more profitable than strawberries. If you had 1,000 coins to spend and used it all on wheat (seed cost + plow cost), after 72 hours you would have a profit of 1,300 coins. If you spent that 1,000 on strawberries instead, after the same time period (taking into account you re-plowed and replanted every 4 hours), you would only have made a 400 profit because of all the frequent plowing cost. Wheat’s 230% profit margin is much better than strawberries’ 140%. I’m not trying to criticize your list, but I’m wondering if I’m missing something here or doing something wrong? Thanks.

is 2 xp the highest crop reward ?? my fingers are getting rsi with all this harvesting !!!
August 12th, 2009 at 1:41 pm
Another, kinof cheap trick to gain xp if you have the time and the cash to do it is to buy and sell rediculous amounts of hay bails, with 500,000 coins, and enough time to buy 5000 of them, its a quick 25,000 xp, im too lazy for it though
August 12th, 2009 at 1:42 pm
For those of us with a life, peppers are the most profitable. I harvest once a day – enough for me, and they give the most coins and XP for the once-a-day harvesters.
My question is when do you earn more dollars? Or do you simply have to pay your real money to get dollars?
August 14th, 2009 at 1:52 am
hey there are new crops and other things but yeah if you could calculate all of the new crops and tell me which are the best that would be awesome mate!!!
btw thanks heaps for all of the help…i am now on level 19 with all ur help and only started late last month so yeah thanks

Cool, I’m glad I can help you out. I have updated my spreadsheet to include the other crops, but I still need exact pricing and harvest time information for Tomatoes, Coffee, and Broccoli. I will update the information as soon as possible.
Rick
August 14th, 2009 at 11:29 pm
Raspberries are better than Strawberries, sorry…
Raspberries:
You have to plow & plant – plow 2x per 4 hours – so, that’s 2xp in “plow” xp currency.
Strawberries:
You plow once (1xp) & you plant once (1xp) per four hours – also 2xp – same as raspberries.
BUT! raspberries get you more $$$.
Strawberries to Raspberries – same xp per 4 hours, but more $$ with Raspberries.
August 17th, 2009 at 12:21 pm
I have done my own spreadsheet showing crops vs reaped benefit – cost to sow – cost to plough.
With this in mind, I can see that:
1. Blueberries
2. Tomatoes
3. Coffee
4. Raspberries
and so on. Any one interested in the full list, let me know.
August 17th, 2009 at 12:44 pm
planting raspberries doesn’t give you any XP!
August 17th, 2009 at 7:42 pm
Broccoli is worth 4XP to plant. Available at level 35
August 18th, 2009 at 5:54 pm
I have my own spread-sheet too. Tomatoes are your best overall bet for coins and experience combined. (Better for coins than experience). Go with Blueberries if you want more XP and you have a lot of time to plant plow and harvest. Rasberries are good but at a certain level they stop giving XP (I think), and they are not as profitable as blueberries. Your best bet if you don’t have that much time is the once-a-day Sunflowers. They earn almost as much coin per hour as Tomatoes but you only have to mess with it once a day. Tomatoes pay twice the xp though.
August 18th, 2009 at 8:26 pm
Tomatoes…
Sell for 173 coins
Harvest in 8 Hours
Buy for 100 coins
1 XP for planting

@Andie
Thank you! This matches my information so now I know it is correct.

The part about planting strawberries as a way of gaining XP points is inaccurate. It seems that you need some variation in terms of what you plant. I’ve planted strawberries many times, and now it gives me 0 XP points whenever I plant them.
August 21st, 2009 at 4:51 am
LAND UTILIZATION is the key to this game. The correct way to analyze which crops/trees/etc are best is to evaluate how much money and XP you can generate PER UNIT OF LAND per day. Land is your limiting function here; the point of the game is to maximize the utility of your land. Therefore, analyzing which crops generate more cash or XP in isolation is useless — no matter how fancy your spreadsheet, it will lead you to the wrong conclusion. You must analyze what you can generate with a given piece of land in a day if you use that piece of land for a given purpose. E.g., if you plant raspberries, you’re going to have 12 cycles of plow, plant and harvest. If you plan pumpkins, you only have 3 cycles. 12 raspberry cycles are better than 3 pumpkin cycles (do the math yourself), therefore raspberries are a better use for the land. Now, most people aren’t freaky enough to wake up every 2 hours during the night to replant, so you have to bring in some practical considerations when planning your planting. If you do this analysis correctly, you’ll find that trees generate the most cash by far, because you can put 16 trees in on square and you don’t have to keep replanting and replowing, but that quick-growing crops like raspberries are the best way to get XP.

There’s a crazy new item on the 1st page of seeds. “Super Berries.” There basically genetically modified strawberries. The profit is phenominal. There the same price to plant as regular strawberries (10 coins) but the harvest in half the time( just 2 hrs.) and bring in 100 coins at harvest. I haven’t found a catch. You can make 900 coins a day on a single plot (10 coins for seed, 15 to plow, leaving 75 profit* 12 harvest per day=900). If I know I’ll be home for two hours I’ll always plant these.

@Alex
In my opinion, the point of the game is to have fun. The fact that decoration items exist that offer no practical use is testament to this fact. Also, I have to disagree with you. By determining each crop’s profit / XP benefit at an hourly rate (per plot), you are able to compare each crop to determine exactly which crop provides the best benefit for each category (profit / XP). If crop A makes 15 coins profit per hour, and crop B only earns 10 coins profit per hour, crop A is clearly the better earner. Therefore, regardless of the harvest length of the crop, or the number of plots you plant with crop A, it will always out perform crop B in terms of profit. This same process can be used for the purpose of determining the best XP earning crops. My “useless” spreadsheet calculates, among other things, the best crops in this manner, allowing me to easily add new information to determine the value of new crops.
As the title of this post states, “Best Income / XP Crops.” I draw your attention to the word Crops. However, on the topic of trees, they are clearly the best profit earners trumping each and every crop.. not merely because of the fact that 16 tress can be planted in the same location as a crop, but because they only require a single investment to obtain. Therefore, they produce continual profit once they have paid for themselves. The problem, however, is that if you use trees exclusively, you will not be earning XP regularly. Also, along your topic of Raspberries being the best way to earn XP, you are both right, and wrong. Although Raspberries are a 2 hour crop, they do not provide XP when they are planted (at least not at my level). Because of this, Raspberries have to be planted twice in order to earn the same amount of XP you could earn from planting Blueberries. In addition to the extra work of planting, harvest, and plowing twice, they provide 11 coins profit per plot, per harvest. Conversely, Blueberries would only need to be planted once in order to equal the same amount of XP, AND they would earn you 26 coins per harvest. Doubling the coins earned per plot of Raspberries (11 * 2 = 22) leaves you short of the 26 you would earn from planting Blueberries. With Raspberries, you earn less profit for doing 2x the work. This information came from my “useless” spreadsheet.
